EDUCATION COMMITTEE:

Our next program is BLACK JEWS IN AMERICA on June 15 at 7:00 pm.   Once black slaves were introduced to American churches, they began to equate the biblical stories of the Jewish slaves in Egypt to their own experiences. Slowly these black people started their own congregations.  The first decades of the 20th century saw the rise of African-American synagogues.  By World War One, Harlem boasted the second largest Jewish community in the country.  In this presentation you will see and hear recordings of Black cantors as well as Black Jewish actors from the Yiddish theaters in New York. Please rsvp to Gloria Pincu, 828-551-5513, mailto:gloria.pincu@gmail.com
